Master of Surgery in General Surgery or M.S. General Surgery is a three-year postgraduate course in the surgical field. It is a mandatory course for candidates who seek careers as surgeons in India. The minimum eligibility for M.S. General Surgery is an M.B.B.S. degree with a minimum one-year internship. Admission to Master of Surgery General Surgery is based on counseling after clearing entrance exams. M.S. General Surgery comprises various specializations varying according to human anatomy. 

The specialization program will include details about the particular human body part to enable candidates to understand the different diseases and surgical treatment methods. This course helps candidates develop the skills required to become a surgeon. Subjects studied in M.S. General Surgery are Basic Medical Sciences as related to General Surgery, Neurosurgery, E.N.T. Eligibility Criteria

  • Students applying for M.S. in General Surgery must have passed their 10+2 level with Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics from a recognized school in India.
  • Students must hold an M.B.B.S. degree from an institute acknowledged by the Medical Council of India.
  • Students must have at least one-year experience in the internship.
  • Students must pass postgraduate entrance exams conducted by institutes and bodies with at least 50 percent.

Entrance Exam

  • AIIMS PG Entrance Test: A.I.I.M.S. is one of the biggest medical institutes in India, and it is known for offering the best medical courses, including M.S. in General Surgery. AIIMS PG Entrance Test is conducted on an All-India basis, and students who have completed M.B.B.S/ B.D.S can apply for the M.S. exam.
  •  NEET PG: NEET PG is one of the biggest medical exams in the country that provides a gateway to the biggest medical institutes in India. This entrance exam is particularly for M.D., MS, or P.G. Diploma courses. Students who have passed M.B.B.S/ B.D.S can apply for the entrance test.

  • Common Entrance Test for Post Graduate Medical Colleges (CET PGMC): CET PGMC is a postgraduate medical entrance exam conducted by Pondicherry Linguistic and Religious Minority Medical & Dental Colleges Welfare Association to admit students seeking admissions in MD/ MS/ PG Diploma Courses offered by colleges under this entrance.

Admission Procedure

Admission to the Masters of Surgery is based on the entrance test, the candidate’s last obtained marks in M.B.B.S., and a one-year Internship. Most of the institutes accept NEET-PG as the qualifying test. In contrast, few institutes, such as A.I.I.M.S., J.I.P.M.E.R., and P.G.I.M.E.R., conduct their entrance examination for admission to the Masters of Surgery course. 

As per the regulations of the Medical Council of India (MCI), as laid out in Postgraduate Regulations 2000 Medical Council of India, the minimum percentage of marks in the entrance test for eligibility for admission to Postgraduate courses shall be 50 % for all candidates. The eligibility for S.C., S.T., category-I & O.B.C. will be 40%.
