What is MS in Pediatric surgery?
M.S. in Paediatric Surgery is a postgraduate course in surgery. A Paediatric surgeon is a qualified surgeon with additional training in performing surgery on young patients, including fetuses (neonatal or fetal surgery), infants, children, adolescents, and teenagers.
The course offers unique exposure to pediatric subspecialties, including respiratory medicine, rheumatology, surgery (day surgery), gastroenterology, and endocrinology. The course aims to build in students the core skills in critical review, communications, medical ethics, statistics, data handling, research methods, principles of evidence-based medicine, good clinical practice, and clinical governance in order to equip them for their medical practice and to prepare them for specialty courses.
Based on specialty, geographic area, and related parameters, Paediatric Surgeons are offered an average annual salary ranging between INR 6 and 8 lakhs in India based on their work experience.
Entrance Exam
To enter an M.B.B.S. program, one must qualify for NEET, a common written medical exam. Based on the scores achieved in this exam, admission gives to colleges. A high NEET score would lead to admission to a prestigious institute. Thus, NEET scores are very important.
For the MS/M.Ch degree, either NEET would be the accepted entrance examination or the college of choice would have its entrance test. Sometimes, even personal interviews are conducted if the entrance test goes well.
Eligibility Criteria
- The minimum eligibility for admission to the course is an M.B.B.S. degree with a minimum aggregate score of 50%.
- Some top universities, institutes, and colleges nationwide conduct entrance examinations for admission.
- All candidates need at least 12 months of clinical rotation in Plastic Surgery in a locally approved training program recognized by the Division of Graduate Medical Studies.
Admission Procedure
- M.B.B.S. or equivalent qualification from an MCI- (Medical Council of India) recognized university or equivalent.
- Registered trainees from a recognized college in the relevant surgical training program have been registered.
- Qualify for an online test followed by a round of counseling
- Candidates have scored a preset minimum aggregate score in the last qualifying examination.
