Fisheries account for 1.07 percent of the total gross domestic product of India. West Bengal is a central fish-producing state in India with the highest average consumption. Fisheries is second to agriculture when offering employment and food supply.
The Neotia University (TNU) offers an ICAR taught Bachelor of Fisheries Science course. The campus is 60 acres and has several ponds at TNU that give students hands-on training and research and development opportunities. The course's curriculum, laboratories, as well as equipment and manuals follow the requirements of ICAR. As part of the course, students will visit field sites such as coastal areas, fishing vessels sampling in rivers, estuaries or reservoirs, aquarium farms and hatcheries, and processing facilities for fish. Students should have finished completing apprenticeships and training programs in (Rural and Entrepreneurship Awareness Development Yojana) READY and Fish Processing or aquaculture in their final year.

Opportunities for employment that are open to B. F. Sc. graduates are plentiful in the public sector as well as the private sector. In the public sector, there are more positions open for Assistant Directors as well as Assistant Fisheries Development Officer (AFDO)/Fisheries Extension Officer (FEO) and Fisheries Development Officer (FDO). In the State Fisheries Development Corporations as well as co-operated
societies, with various available positions, such as Managers and Project Officers, Production Manager Farm Manager Fisheries Officers and many more. For Fish Farmers Development Agency (FFDA) and Brackishwater Farmers Development Agency (BFDA), the opportunities are Executive Officers from the states in which they are located. In both nationalized and private banks, various positions are available, such as Manager Assistant Development Officer, Rural Development Officer, Field Extension Officer, and field officers in agriculture. Graduates of the Fisheries field can also find jobs in central agencies such as Aquaculture Technicians, Laboratory Assistants Technical Officers within Marine Product Export Development Authority (MPEDA) Export Inspection Agency (EIA), Coastal Aquaculture Authority of India (CAA), Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and as Technical Officers within Fisheries Survey of India (FSI), National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Indian National Centre for Ocean and Information Services (INCOIS). Graduates are eligible to apply to Research Projects or pursue higher studies at Master of Fisheries Science (M.F.Sc). Graduates of Fisheries can also establish their own business as entrepreneurs, such as aqua-shoppe, aquarium, a fish breeding centre, shrimp farming, fishing farming, cage culture, processing of fish dry packing cold chain, cold storage business. Engage an export-import business in the markets both national and international.
