Common Admission Test (CAT) is one of the hardest exams one has to take for qualifying for Management colleges in the country. The marks or the percentile in the exam marks the candidate’s eligibility for getting recognised in prestigious colleges and institutions. The exam is conducted by Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in order to test the verbal, qualitative, and reasoning abilities of an applicant. With the rising competition the popularity of this exam has also increased further and cracking the exam has got tougher as well.

The registration for CAT generally begins in the month of August and ends by the end of the month of September. After the closure of registration, admit cards are issued to students who successfully complete the application. However, in order to successfully crack the examination a lot of hard work is involved in it. The following steps can be very helpful in terms of the exam:

  • Analysis: First step in terms of finding the correct point is to analyse yourself. You have to create a sheet where you list down all of your strengths and weaknesses. This way you will be able to assess what you have to strengthen and what you can use as your pillar. This will also boost your confidence for the examination.
  • Time management: One of the main segments which prove as a hurdle for students is managing their time successfully. Time management can break or make a whole exam and thus one has to keep on practicing for increasing their pace in which they give the exam. Regular practice can help in the assessment of time for every segment and help them further make it better.
  • Tuition compared to self-study: There is a thin line of difference between the two scenarios. If you are really confident that you are able to crack the exam on your own then you should do it. It will take a lot from you but you can always aspire for the bigger part. But if you feel that a tutor can help you in achieving your goal in a better way then you can opt for that too. It generally keeps you on track and also gives you an idea about the competition out there.
  • Strategic research: You have to prepare your own game plan. This helps you in managing your time, the kind of preparation that you need and also gives you the determination to follow the same. It gives you the goal that you have to achieve and thus gives a clearer picture of where you need to reach!

Recommended Books for CAT Preparation:

  • Quantum CAT by Sarvesh Verma (Arihant Publication)
  • How to prepare for verbal ability and reading comprehension by Arun Sharma and Meenakshi Sharma (TMH publication)
  • The Pearson guide to quantitative aptitude and data interpretation by Nishit Sinha

Apart from these books, basic grammar books by Wren and Martin would also be really helpful for the English segment. The determination is the most important part for cracking the exam!
