Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering aims to give opportunities to candidates who are interested in meeting the demands in terms of marine and naval resources. They work for the industry that is connected to shipping, engineering in ocean and offshore as well. One has to understand it is a job that requires a lot of courage and hard work since the person has to stay on or off the field all the time.

Educational Requirements

One should have an engineering degree in naval architecture and ocean engineering if they are interested in this career. It is a 4 year long course that teaches the students about designing and well as the engineering that goes in it. Since it combines two different career paths it is important to understand the subject matter and apply it in precision during the practical work. Marine engineers and naval architects who are preparing for their career must qualify exams conducted by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). Students who have completed graduation should take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam as well. Once someone has qualified the FE, individuals should be working for 4 years and then they can apply for Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam. This makes them eligible for working as a professional in the field of work.

A candidate is eligible for getting into the B. Tech Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering course if they have qualified class 12th with Maths, Biology, and Chemistry as majors. Institutes like Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Indian Maritime University, The Neotia College, Kolkata, Chandigarh University, BITS, Hyderabad are some of the best ones to opt for.

Career Prospects

Naval engineers generally have to take the complete responsibility of the work and thus they are to be very attentive and hardworking while they keep up their managerial abilities. One has to know the different things about engineering and as well as architecture. In terms of designing one can work for merchant ships, oil or gas tankers, cargo ships, warships or frigates, aircraft carriers, etc.

Designing, construction, consultancy, repairing are some of the major work areas of a naval engineer. However one can also opt for being a port manager who manages the activities that go on in the port itself. They can earn somewhere upto Rs. 1.5 to Rs. 2 Lakhs per year. One can opt for the chief marine engineer post as well  and other posts offered in this segment of career are Technical Superintendent, Marine Surveyor, Ship Operator, Second Marine Engineer and the salaries might hike from a mere Rs. 2 Lakh to Rs. 20 Lakh per year depending on these different posts.
