Major Boost To PG Medical Education In Tamil Nadu: NMC Nod For 88 PG, 14 SS Seats

In an attempt to ensure that more medical aspirants in Telangana get a chance in the medical colleges of the State, the Government of Telangana has now reserved 85 percent of Category-B management quota MBBS and BDS seats in the minority and non-minority private medical colleges for local students.

Issuing two Government Orders (GO) in this regard, the Telangana Government made it clear that only 15 percent of Category-B UG medical and dental seats will remain open for students outside the State.

The Government Orders issued by the Health and Family Welfare Department on Thursday stated, "The registrar of Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS), Telangana has proposed amendments to the rules of admissions into MBBS and BDS courses under management quota. The state government, after careful examination of the matter, has decided to amend the Telangana unaided non-minority professional institutions (Regulations of Admissions into Undergraduate Medical and Dental Professional Courses) Rules, 2007."

"In the said rules, only 15% of B Category seats in private medical colleges in Telangana will be open to candidates from all over the country," the GO quoted by the Times of India.

With the implementation of this new rule, the medical aspirants in Telangana will be able to avail of 1 068 additional Category-B MBBS seats in all 24 private medical colleges in Telangana.

According to the latest media report by the New Indian Express, among the 3 750 seats in 24 private medical colleges, 3,200 are in 20 non-minority colleges. Among these, 35 per cent, i.e. 1, 120 seats are in Category-B, and as per the Government order, now 85 per cent of these seats will remain reserved for the local students of the State. Therefore, the medical aspirants in Telangana will be allowed to avail of 952 seats, and 168 seats will remain available for the students across the country.

In the case of Minority colleges, 137 out of 550 seats are in Category B, and 85 per cent of these seats are reserved for local candidates. Therefore, 116 seats are reserved for the Telangana students, and 21 seats are available for the students outside Telangana.

Earlier, due to the no-reservation policy, students from other States were getting admitted to the medical colleges in Telangana. Referring to this problem, a press release from the State Health Department stated, "Due to this, candidates of Telangana faced a disadvantage in their State. They were forced to go to countries like Ukraine, China and Russia to pursue medical education."

While commenting on this, a lawyer in the High Court told TNIE, "Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu have more MBBS seats than any other State. The government is empowered to pass such rules."

Although this move has been welcomed by the Healthcare Reforms Doctors Association (HRDA), it has been demanded by the association to revise the GO and extend the rule for the Postgraduate medical seats.

"HRDA appreciates the move of Hon'ble HM @trsharish. But why is the amendment restricted to only UG seats while huge demand is for PG seats? We urge the HM to immediately amend GO Nos 40 & 42 dt:9/5/2017 so that 100% B cat PG seats are reserved for TS students," the association mentioned in a Tweet.
