Considering that R Ahmed Dental College and Hospital Kolkata does not have adequate infrastructure, the (DCI) Dental Council of India has recommended a 50% reduction in the BDS seats in the institute.
DCI took such a decision after noting that the college needed adequate equipment, staff, and infrastructure to run 100 BDS Seats.

Apart from the BDS seats, the Apex dental commission has also suggested a reduction in the PG dental seats. The Council has recommended that the Union Health Ministry reduce the PG dental seats in seven disciplines by one seat each.

Apart from the BDS program, the college also offers MDS courses in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics and Orofacial Orthopaedics, Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Paedodontics, Periodontics, Prosthodontics and Maxillofacial Prosthesis, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.
BDS seats for the dental institute increased from 50 to 100 in 2007. Besides 100 regular seats, there are 25 more seats for applicants in the EWS category. Currently, it offers an MDS course with 33 seats.
As per the latest media report, a joint verification team recently visited the college on December 26 and 27. During the check, the DCI team found that the institute needed more staff, equipment, and required infrastructure.
Therefore, the Dental Council has recommended reducing 50% of BDS seats at the college. Besides the regular seats, the Council has also suggested slashing the EWS category seats by 50%.
Further, the one Postgraduate dental seat in each of the seven disciplines may decrease since the Council will recommend the same to the Union Health Ministry.
